Bug Club Online Reading
Studies show that reading regularly is one of the most important things a child can do to improve their overall learning. This is why reading is such a great focus at Highfield.
In a recent reading questionnaire, KS2 parents showed an interest in accessing books online to support their children in reading more frequently. As a result, we have invested in an online reading scheme called Bug Club for children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
By visiting www.activelearnprimary.co.uk children will have access to a range of high quality, digital books. The books appear in each child’s library once their teacher has selected the book band for them to read through. Once they have been completed, the next set will be allocated.
During reading, children will notice a small green bug club icon which can be clicked on to reveal a question. These interactive questions help check understanding and give children practise of answering the style of questions used by teachers and in testing.
We hope that access to Bug Club will encourage more reading at home across KS2 and provide access to books for those who need it. Of course, we would like Bug Club to be an additional resource rather than replacing real books and wider reading. The most valuable form of reading is reading aloud to an adult with a brief discussion about words, plot and characters.
Reading records can include comments referring to Bug Club and teachers are able to view each child’s reading history through the website.
