Religious Education (RE) Curriculum

RE is an important part of the school curriculum and is taught relevant to the child’s stage of development and experience. At Highfield, we seek to provide a clearer idea of what religion is about, the importance that it plays in many people’s lives and how that faith is expressed in their daily lives and routines.

INTENT

Our intention in teaching RE is that all children will:

  • Acquire and develop a knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour.
  • Form their own opinions about religious beliefs and customs.
  • Develop an understanding and tolerance of different faiths.
  • Be culturally aware of the world around them and are aware of some of the impact of religion throughout the world, its influences on the lives of individuals and communities.
  • Have self-awareness and self-respect and help pupils develop their social and moral development by encouraging a positive attitude and valuing the beliefs of others, however different from their own.

IMPLEMENTATION

The teaching of RE at Highfield ensures that each year group progresses on previous learning and develops more understanding of each of the religions. The scheme of learning matches the intent by allowing the children ample opportunities to cover the main religions in Britain and their community. It allows children to express their views, discover their own beliefs and think about religions. There are opportunities for questioning and for children to explore and ask questions. The learning is inclusive which enables all children to be involved and access learning.

Curriculum overview

We follow the Trafford agreed syllabus for RE from RE Today. It is broken down into three strands, believing, expressing and living. The programme is followed throughout school from Reception through to Year 6. The teaching enables pupils to:

  • Know about and understand a range of religions and world views.
  • Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and
  • world views.
  • Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldview
