Letter formation and pencil control

  •  Have a look at this fun sky writer game showing you how to form your letters correctly
  • Encourage your child to practise writing their name, using a range of media to make it exciting such as chalk on pavement, felt tip pens, pencil, paint, water on an outdoor wall, using a finger in sand/flour etc. Make sure to correct any letters that are formed incorrectly, remembering that it is important that children start their letters in the correct place, even if the overall letter looks fine, as this will help them when they come to learn cursive (joined up) writing.
  • Fine motor activities help to warm up and strengthen children's fingers to help them with their pencil grip and control. Check out some of these quick fun ideas here.

Counting

  • Practise counting small groups of objects around your house such as marbles or lego bricks. It may help you at first to move each piece once you have counted it, so that you don't miss any out or count any twice. Start with objects up to 10, then up to 20 and beyond.
  • Check out some of these fun counting songs to join in with. Regular repetition of counting to 10 will help children to remember it off by heart.
  • Practise your counting, ordering and matching numbers to 10 with the gingerbread man game
  • Can you help find the underwater treasure with this counting game
