CLASS 8 Curriculum

Summer 1 2024

Below you will find more information and detail about what will be covering over this half term.

Maths

In Maths, we will be focusing on units based on position and direction, and shape.

English

The stimuli for our writing will be the 2012 Guardian advert ‘Three Little Pigs’. Throughout the unit, we  will be exploring journalistic writing by identifying  viewpoint and bias. We will be writing our  own persuasive speeches  and newspaper reports linked to the advert. 

In SPAG lessons, we will be looking at word families, and how prefixes and suffixes can be used to change the meaning of words.

Reading: within reading lessons, we will continue to read our class text, There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom.

History - Crime and Punishment

We will go on a journey through British history and discover how crime and punishment has changed throughout the ages, beginning with the Romans and travelling through to the present day. We will look at how changes in society  create changes in the kinds of crimes that are committed, as well as the ways in which they are punished.

Spanish

Our next topic in Spanish is, ‘Out of this world’ where we will be learning the names of the planets and using adjectives to describe them. We will also be able to read and understand information about planets.

R.E. 

In R.E. we will explore the question, ‘What matters most to Christians and Humanists?’ We will learn about caring for  others and the world, and why it matters. We will discuss the question ‘What can we learn from religions about  deciding right and wrong?’ 

Science

We will start the half term learning about states of matter, investigating how mixtures might be separated through:  filtering, sieving and evaporating and looking  at reversible and irreversible changes. We will then move on to learning about Earth and Space.

Computing

In Computing lessons we will be using a movie making app to make videos, we will then learn how to edit them to  create a finished movie, linked to Highfield’s 70th anniversary!

Music

Within our Music lessons, we will be considering the question, 'How does music shape our way of life?' We will also be exploring how we can improvise and compose music using the glockenspiels. 

P.S.H.E

Our PSHE learning will focus on ‘Being my best’, we will discuss the importance of keeping fit. We will also identify our own strengths and talents and also identify areas that need improvement and discuss strategies for enabling us to  achieve those improvements. 

Physical Education

Indoor PE will be Benchball

Outdoor PE will be Tag Rugby

Art

We will be using the Bayeux Tapestry to inspire our textile unit. We will learn a variety of stitches before creating our  own Highfield-inspired tapestry.

DT 

We will begin our double unit on electronic programming. Linking with our crime and punishment theme, we will be  creating a prison cell which opens and closes on a timer - using Lego Wedo kits.
