Home learning

We have made a list of activities to try at home to support learning in the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Many of these activities should be able to be done without needing to buy any resources.  We have tried to make them open and flexible.

This is not a tick list for you to work down, choose your favourites and do them as many times as you like – repeating them is good!

Listen to the story, 'Duck in the Truck'.

Can you hear Miss Errington make a mistake? She says druck instead of duck!

If you were the Duck, what would you say to your friends that helped you?

Previous stories

You can listen to one of our favourite big books read by Mrs Horrocks.

What is your favourite fruit to snack on?

What a funny story!

Can you design or make a fabulous shell for Norman?

If you can, go on a snail hunt in your garden and see if you can spot any empty shells for Norman.

English activities

Sounds activities

  • Check out some of the games on phonicsplay website (currently has free access, username march20 password home). Click on phase 1 resources for games links to rhymes and sounds.

Letter formation and pencil control

  •  Have a look at this fun sky writer game showing you how to form your letters correctly
  • Encourage your child to practise writing their name daily, using a range of media to make it exciting such as chalk on pavement, felt tip pens, pencil, paint, water on an outdoor wall, using a finger in sand/flour etc. Make sure to correct any letters that are formed incorrectly, remembering that it is important that children start their letters in the correct place, even if the overall letter looks fine, as this will help them when they come to learn cursive (joined up) writing
  • Having good pencil control is extremely important in good letter formation/handwriting so check out some of these fun sheets to help practise this or this exciting workbook to try. Encourage your child to slow down and take their time so that they follow the line accurately.
  • Practise your cutting skills with these fun farm cutting activities. Maybe you could use them to create your own picture afterwards?
  • Fine motor activities help to warm up and strengthen children's fingers to help them with their pencil grip and control. Check out some of these quick fun ideas here.
