SPAG at highfield

Intent

The aim of our spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) curriculum is to develop pupils who have an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions which allows them to read and write clearly, accurately and coherently for a range of purposes. We feel it is essential for children to develop a good understanding of SPAG in order to strengthen their writing and reading.

How we teach SPAG

All SPAG planning follows the objectives set out in the National Curriculum, which can be found here.

Punctuation and Grammar

In order to enhance children's punctuation and grammar, children partake in weekly discrete SPAG lessons. SPAG is then covered further throughout English lessons, enabling children to reinforce and apply their punctuation and grammar knowledge.

Spelling

Children receive weekly spelling lessons, delivered using the Spelling Shed programme.

Spelling Shed provides a clear structure to ensure the delivery and progression of spelling patterns and common exception words for each phase. The various spelling rules and groups of words are broken down into weekly lists which are sent home for practice, taught within lessons and accessible on the Spelling Shed online portal where children can practice their spelling through interactive games.

Due to our mixed age classes, our curriculum is taught on a rolling programme. This means that Year 3 and 4 will be taught the same content each academic year (the same applies to Years 5 and 6).
