(Religious Education)

What is our intent for RE at Highfield?

RE is an important part of the school curriculum and is taught relevant to the child’s stage of development and experience. At Highfield, we seek to provide a clearer idea of what religion is about, the importance that it plays in many people’s lives and how that faith is expressed in their daily lives and routines.

We aim to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour. We want all children to form their own opinions about religious beliefs and customs and ensure that they develop and understanding and tolerance of different faiths. We aim for all children to enjoy learning about religion because it is taught in a stimulating and interesting way that arouses their curiosity and develops positive skills and attitudes. We want to help pupils understand some of the impact of religion throughout the world, its influences on the lives of individuals and communities and its effect on the cultural diversity of their own and other societies both presently and in the past. We want to support pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by encouraging self-awareness and self-respect and help pupils develop their social and moral development by encouraging a positive attitude and valuing the beliefs of others, however different from their own.

Curriculum overview

We follow the Trafford agreed syllabus for RE from RE Today. It is broken down into three strands, believing, expressing and living. The programme is followed throughout school from Reception through to Year 6. The teaching enables pupils to:

  • Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews.
  • Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and
